Alcohol and hair loss

Can drinking alcohol cause hair loss?

I keep on writing about bad habits also in this post. This time I decided to have a closer look at the effects of consuming alcohol. Is there any relation between alcohol and hair loss?

Woman is drinking whiskey
Several medical conditions may be related to alcohol misuse. Is hair loss one them?

The short answer is yes. Keep on reading and learn more about the reasons.

I suppose we all know the two faces of drinking alcohol. It can be a special part of a wonderful meal or make you feel good going out with some friends. And it can also destroy lives. Drinking too much alcohol obviously have several negative effects. Drinking regularly makes it even more serious. But is there any relation with hair loss? Our human body is wonderful and it tries to compensate as long as it’s possible but anything that is wrong to your body may cause health issues sooner or later. Given the complexity of human body these problems can vary. Excessive alcohol use will not just make you sick the day after but may have an effect on your sleep, the vitamin levels in your body or even your blood sugar. And just one of these can be enough to face hair loss. So the answer is yes. Alcohol use can cause hair loss

The reasons why alcohol may cause hair loss:

  • Poor nutrition: Alcohol means empty calories. Usually the more you drink, the less you eat. It’s like cheating your body. You possibly don’t feel to be hungry. In the meantime you’re slowly running out of vitamins and minerals that are important for your health. It will effect your scalp and hair, too.
  • Inability to absorb the nutrients: Even if you do care about taking the necessary nutrients with a balanced diet, you may face with the lack of vitamins. The reason is in the stomach. Alcohol can make it more acidic by destroying the lining of it. In such a condition it’s more difficult to absorb nutrients in the proper way.
  • Dehydration: Not only vomiting can cause dehydration. When you consume alcohol your body will possibly lose more fluid because of the decreased amount of anti-diuretic hormone. It makes your body capable for reabsorbing water. You can do something to avoid it. Drink water along with alcohol to prevent dehydration and the hair loss, dry and brittle hair or dandruff which may come along with it.
  • Poor quality sleep: Maybe you doubt this point because drinking can make you fall asleep faster. Unfortunately it’s poor quality sleep because alcohol blocks REM sleep, which is said to be the most restorative type. Poor sleep means higher stress level very often and it can be a reason of hair loss, too.
  • The change in estrogen levels: Yes, alcohol may influence the level of the hormone that is related to hair growth (and many more). Too much of it can lead not only to hair problems but depression or putting on some weight.
Changes in blood sugar: Depending on the amount of alcohol you consume, it can increase (less drink) or decrease (more drink) the blood sugar. Long term you run the risk of diabetes, because it can make insulin less effective. And what about hair? Your hair will possibly not get the necessary nutrients from your bloodstream.
A woman with a glass of alcohol.
Not only the adults are involved. In 2016, 23% of 15 year olds reported having been drunk in the last four weeks. (Source: https://alcoholchange.org.uk/alcohol-facts/fact-sheets/alcohol-statistics )

Why do we drink?

We all know the bad effects of drinking alcohol more or less. And we say that health is the most important. So why do we drink all the same? Normally drinking alcohol is not for a daily routine but something for special occasions or going out sometimes. But if you read a little more about the facts, you’ll find that „alcohol misuse is the biggest risk factor for death, ill-health and disability among 15-49 year-olds in the UK.” (Source: Alcohol Change UK, https://alcoholchange.org.uk/alcohol-facts/fact-sheets/alcohol-statistics , downloaded: 29.05.2019.)

I know there is not one single reason to drink alcohol in a higher volume. But I also know that in a balanced life there should be more than just work for someone else, then getting home exhausted. We all need happiness and joy but it seems that we have no time to enjoy our lives. We are struggling to meet the expectations and very often the life we live doesn’t make us happy at all. There are lucky persons for sure, who love their jobs, for example, and rather think about it just like a hobby. I also used to have a work what I loved and it was normal to still care about it after the end of the working day, or even the working week. Nevertheless, the most of us are waiting for the weekend already from Monday. Of course, work is not the most important part of our lives but definitely the one we spend the most time with. We spend more time with work than with our loved ones. That’s why it has a really huge effect on our mood and our behaviour. There can be situations when a person feels her life (together with her work) to be a trap. Longing for some change but strictly ruled by the things „she must do”, like work. When you only see tasks and problems to solve everywhere and every day, you may reach a point when you feel to be not enough to do it and you may get depressed. In such conditions it’s not seldom that people think or feel that alcohol is the only way to forget every days’ troubles. It’s really sad. It’s like escaping. It’s like searching for some moments with no stress, no expectations, no problems. Moments of ease. Easy to say, harder to make… but we all have to make some changes sometimes. Mainly if it has an effect on our health.

Instead of alcohol

It’s essential to have some rest after work or during the weekend. We all should have some time to forget problems and focus on enjoying the moment. There are several different ways to do that. Try to find yours. Some just want to spend more time with loved ones, others like to go out with friends. Maybe you prefer going on a short trip or just taking your guitar and get lost while playing your favourite songs at home. Read a new book or try a new sport. After an exhausting week it’s essential to enjoy yourself for your heart’s content and start the next week with new energy. We can agree about that. But unfortunately it’s another example for easy to say, harder to make. Most people have no time for themselves. The reason can be having too many things to arrange but sometimes a better time management could help.

Woman makes yoga on the beach.

What to do to prevent medical conditions (not limited only to hair loss) caused by alcohol?

I don’t think there could be a better advice than not to drink, or at least drink wisely. Keep an eye on how much and how often you drink and consume water as well. Have a balanced diet and nutritional supplements also, if necessary. It’s widely known that alcohol intake can damage liver. N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a supplement with a lot of benefits and easily available on the market. This is an amino acid that can be found also in foods, like chicken, cheese, seeds and more. It is takes a big part of detoxification of human body. Learn more also about alcohol units and stay in control.

I also have my own personal experience about a family member with such problems so I really could see how harmful can alcohol be to someone’s life and overall health. And when I say someone’s life, actually it’s the whole family’s life. That’s why I think it’s important to ask for a doctor’s advice and help as soon as possible. When I started to write this post I just wanted to know if alcohol could cause hair loss or not. Soon I knew the answer is yes. Nevertheless I had to go further a bit because of the fact that it has much more negative effects than hair loss. Something that can actually destroy lives and make future kind of impossible or at least really difficult for some. It’s never too late to make a change but we have to acknowledge sometimes that we really need some help to do that.

Going to bed late and hair loss

Does poor sleep effect hair loss?

Sleeping can define your day. After a bad sleep you can hardly think about anything else but going to bed again. It’s not only about being physically tired but concentration is also a hard task. As long as it’s about one night it will probably not cause you big problems but there are more and more people to suffer from regular sleeping problems. Long term it may effect your health. Because of the complexity of human body the problems can be really diversified. It’s something like dominoes. One problem can easily cause another. It means that poor sleep can influence even your hair. Things change as we get older. As a child we usually don’t like going to bed but I guess all adults would be happy to have at least a short nap time after work. Sleeping during the day can make you feel better but it’s not the equal to sleeping at night. The reason is sleep cycle.

A woman is sleeping in bed.
More and more people have problems about sleeping.

How many hours should we sleep?

There are countless articles on internet about this topic. That’s why I wouldn’t go too deep into this and I’d rather write about my own experience. Maybe you have similar ones. I think all of us is a little different. Also regarding how much sleep we need. As far as I see no articles can define one and only truth for all. It depends not only on age but working type and the working hours, too. It makes a difference if you have kids and even the actual season matters. 7-8 hours are said to be the best for adults generally. Is that okay for all of us? On the weekends I can afford getting up without an alarm clock. It happens quiet often to me to get up earlier than I wanted. And then I can decide… to wake up that early or sleep a little more. The strange thing is that if I choose to go back to bed (and make sure to sleep 8 hours), I feel really tired after getting up. If I take this early wake-up-thing as a sign and start my day a little earlier I have a lot of energy. And it still doesn’t make any difference about being an evening person. I’m still that kind. It’s like a misery to force myself to get up at 5am because of my phone alarm. But when it’s my body to wake up without any alarm, it seems that I’ve had enough sleep. Yes, even if it wasn’t 7-8 hours. Maybe you’ve also had such experience.

Working hours and poor sleep?

Yes, I do believe that there can be a relation. In the past I was working in different shifts so I could test what is better for me. To keep it short working in night shift is the worst thing. Everybody knows it but only if you have tried it, you know the real difference. I thought it would be great for me because I’m an evening person. I made it for a few years. As time went by enough sleeping was a non-existing category. It didn’t matter how long I slept, I was never ever relaxed. And it made me feel gloomy and did made signs on my appearance. On my skin and on my hair, too. Sleeping short or long… it was still poor sleep and I saw some relations between poor sleep and hair loss.

Woman in settee during daytime.
Nap time is great but sleeping only by day will probably not make you fully rested.

How can poor sleep cause hair loss?

It can have several negative effects on your health. But what’s this post got to do with hair care at all… you can ask. The answer is that some of these effects can influence your appearance. Your beauty and your hair, too. People who cannot have good sleep are often get too stressed, and sometimes depressed. In such a condition they can have poor appetite, as well. And because it’s like dominoes… poor appetite may lead to vitamin deficiency. Nutrients are necessary for overall health. Also for healthy and beautiful hair. Stress itself alone can cause hair loss. Click here to read more about hair loss and stress. The lack of vitamins and minerals can make the situation even worse. I would say that not poor sleep itself but its negative effects can create such conditions in which you may probably face the problem of hair loss.

Good sleep and noise?

Maybe I didn’t have up-to-date pieces of information before because I was really surprised when I read about people trying to fall asleep with noise. Of course it’s not just simple sound. It’s called white noise and it’s said to help about a better sleep for adults and children, too. It creates soothing sounds with static frequencies. Thanks to which you pay less attention to external sounds (like a barking dog). Nevertheless the story is not this simple because there are noise also with other colours, like pink, brown or grey. Special machines are available on the market to create these sounds in your bedroom. Offers have a wide price range as you can see:

And this is how white noise sounds:

If you are a person who prefers silence, you can make a try with a Himalayan salt lamp. Thanks to the negative ions that it releases, it can improve your sleep. Sleeping well and being relaxed or being exhausted all the time effect also other things in your life. It can be about some additional things regarding your life style. If you cannot have proper rest you will have no energy to make some sports, you will not longing for going outside and make a short trip for example. Maybe you won’t be in the mood to meet friends too often. And it’s not only about going to bed late, remember that sleeping too much can also be poor sleep. Try to know your body and find out what’s the best for you about sleeping habits. Search for methods of reducing stress and don’t hesitate to visit your doctor if you have such problems for a longer time.

Should you have any feedback or question feel free to use Your Beauty Hair’s contact form or email me at info@yourbeautyhair.co.uk.

Bad habits as hair loss causes

Can smoking cause hair loss?

Usually we tend to say that our century has turned into a very bad road with a lot of bad habits to ruin our health and social life, too. From some point of view it may be true because everything has become much more easier to get. The market is full of awesome (and less awesome) offers to buy and try, available to most of us. Nevertheless I’m not sure about some of the bad habits. What about one of the biggest market, smoking? It has an effect on our health and beauty as well. I can’t say it’s a good effect. And actually smoking itself has a centuries-old history. Can it have a bad effect also on your hair? Is it a possible cause of hair loss?

Long-haired woman and smoke.
Smoking has its own history but it doesn’t make it a healthy habit.

History of smoking

Although Christopher Colombus is said to be the first European to smoke, America discovered it ages before. It’s thought that smoking was common in shamanistic rituals as early as 5000 BC. Carvings from around 900 AD shows that Mayan civilizations also smoked and even a Mayan pot was found in Guatemala in 2012. It was full of cigars. After hand-made cigarettes and pipes, rolled and boxed cigarettes became available only from the late 1800s when mass production started and generated a huge demand on the market. It was the most popular at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. While you can see terrible pictures about the effects of smoking on boxes today, it was something „cool” before. Advertised also by famous persons. By now it’s become acknowledged that smoking is harmful in several ways but let’s get back to hair care. Does it have any bad effect on hair? Is it a possible cause of hair loss?

Smoking and your body

All of us are aware of the biggest harm it may cause: it can seriously damage your lungs. You’ve possible faced its bad effects on skin, as well. In this post I’m gonna write about something else. This is the effect smoking can have on vitamins in your body. We can say that the human body creates itself time after time by building millions of cells. To do that it needs essential vitamins and minerals, too. Unfortunately free radicals are also generated in our bodies. By toxins. Not only because of bad habits, like smoking but also through some normal metabolic processes. These free radicals can damage healthy cells and vitamins are the key to protect us by neutralizing them. The sad thing is that when you smoke the production of free radicals are faster. It means that your body uses  – and needs – more vitamins.

  • After smoking just one cigarette you can say good-bye to almost half of the recommended daily doses of Vitamin C. To the vitamin that can strengthen your hair.
  • This bad habit may decrease also the levels of vitamin B what is essential for healthy scalp.
  • It can influence on the absorption of dietary iron. The essential mineral that can help to prevent hair loss.
  • Vitamin E is, the „beauty anti-oxidant” can help you to have beautiful and younger skin, of course… but it can do a lot also about neutralizing the toxins generated by smoking. The level of this vitamin may also be lower if you smoke.

Vegetables and fruits
You can have the best vitamins from food. Keep a balanced diet.

The relation between smoking and hair loss

Smoking effects your body’s abilty to absorb vitamins and minerals. So I think it’s just normal logic. You’re body needs sufficient nutrients to build healthy cells. Also for growing healthy hair. Smoking decrease the levels of vitamins while increase the production of free radicals that destroy cells. It sounds obvious that smoking can have a bad effect on your hair, too. Smoking may be a reason of hair loss by reducing the levels of vitamins and minerals.

In the other hand, even if we say that smoking can take part in hair loss, it doesn’t mean that the ones who doesn’t smoke never face this problem. Hair loss is a common problem among both genders, several ages. And it’s not that simple to find the real reason. It’s not something to find out in a post, not even on one single visit at the doctor. Genetics, some diseases, infections, some medicines, stress or incomplete nutrition all can be a possible reason. And smoking can make the situation even worse.

A hand refuses cigatettes from another hand.
Ask for help and quit smoking.

I know that quitting smoking is not easy and a lot of people claim that it makes them less stressed. It’s said that only 3 out of 100 persons can do that. Nevertheless it’s never too late to make another try and in the meantime you can focus on taking vitamins. Smokers are adviced to take higher amount of Vitamin C. A balanced diet is also important because it’s the best to get the vitamins and minerals from food.

Before taking extra amounts of any nutritional supplements, ask for advice from a doctor.

Hair accessories for kids

Hair bows for the little ones

During winter days a lot of us prefer wearing a hat even if it makes hair styling almost impossible. Anyway some hats can make your appearance more characteristic. It can show you more sporty or more elegant depending on the type of the hat you choose. As the weather gets better and we put down these articles of clothing we may consider bringing some colour into grey days and wear some hair accessories. It’s not a really new thing, they had their special role throughout the history, too. Different types of accessories from  various materials were to show social class, age or even religiousness. And not only for women. From the quiet wide range of such products, in this post I write about hair bows for little ones.

Blond girl with yellow hair bow.

Hair bows were very popular for both genders in the past. Now they’re mainly worn by little girls.

Hair bows

Hair bows are mainly worn by pretty little girls now but it wasn’t like this in the past. It was really popular among both genders in the 17th and 18th century. In Europe it was worn also by kings and court members. Popularity continued in the 19th century but the 20th century was already a little different. Hair bows needed a few decades’break to come back again from around 1940. Of course there is some practical line in using hair bows but it’s mainly about adornment. Maybe that’s the reason of loosing its popularity among adult ones. Now we try to live a practical life, to arrange all the necessary things, do our best at work and try to be a good parent and wife. Maybe in this rushing life we are not open to see the beauty and fun of life.

A brown-haired woman wears light pink hair bow.

We’ve grown up and try to see things as they are. And hair bows doesn’t seem to fit grey weekdays and not adult
appearance. I’ve heard too many times to grow up and stop doing (wearing) childish things. Maybe you, too. Well, I still like the women who are brave enough to wear hair bows. But now let’s get back to hair bows for the little ones.

I decided to write about this topic because I had a really strange experience. I just heard someone talking about how unfair it is to dress a little girl in girlish clothes with girlish accessories, just like hair bows. Some people think, it will show that child only the importance of the outfit and force her to follow society’s expectations without exploring her gender . Later I read also about gender neutral parenting. It’s a real thing followed by a lot of people. Of course it’s not my goal to say what is good and what is wrong. I wouldn’t even judge any point of views but this post is probably not valuable at all for you if you support gender neutral thoughts. I’m happy to see that children are still able to dream and believe.

A little girl doesn’t like a girlish hair bow only because of society. She doesn’t even know what society is. If she loves hair bows and likes to wear them, it’s honest. And why should you say no when she would like to explore herself this way, with hair bows for the little ones.

I’m sure… we all have experienced that hair is vulnerable in general. A child’s hair is even more sensitive. That’s why it’s important to choose hair accessories especially for children. Have a look at these ones:

If your little princess would like to wear a different colour every day this set of 3 inches headbands would be a good choice.

These handmade hair bows are really large and so impressive in 15 different colours. They fit many outfits and they’re made of safety materials, no harm to baby’s skin.

AnaGain for hair growth

Hair growth products with Anagain

Since I’ve been searching for a little more information about hair growth products, I found a lot of „miracles”. Also some special ones. The ones I could also believe in. I wrote one of them in my previous post, hair care with CBD.  Today’s special one is Anagain. Given I din’t know any plant with this name I made a little search on internet. I didn’t even know if it was a natural ingredient or something synthetic. Well, I wouldn’t say that it’s easy to find a plenty of information about this component. For me it seems to be still something new but already award-winning. Hair growth products with Anagain seem to work…

Anagain in hair care. On Your Beauty Hair
Have you ever thought about peas related hair growth?

The born of Anagain

We are able to use this component thanks to Mibelle Biochemistry. It’s a Swiss company with the aim of developing high-quality, naturally derived actives. Their cosmetic ingredients are available in more than fifty countries. Anagain is just one of their several products for hair care. (Not to talk about other categories.) In 2014 Anagain won the Advanced Ingredient Award in Paris.

Anagain for hair growth is from Switzerland
Switzerland. Always remember chocolate and AnaGain.

What is Anagain at all?

And can you trust in hair growth products with Anagain? This active ingredient is made from just a few days old organic pea sprouts. So it’s natural and given I prefer avoiding artificial components I was happy when I read it. Young pea sprouts are high in nutrients and isoflavone. And the key is said to be in isoflavone which can have a positive effect on hair growth. It can prolong its life cycle and restore the vitality of hair. Of course Mibelle Biochemistry made tests as well. You can have a closer look at Mibelle Biochemistry’s publication here.

AnaGain is an award-winning active ingredient to make your hair healthier and thicker.

What products are there with AnaGain?

Based on the information I found, this active ingredient is specially for hair and used in such products:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Scalp mask
  • Thickening serum
  • Supplement capsules
  • Moisture treatment
  • Scalp treatment

Given the fact that women and men are also involved in hair loss and thin hair, Anagain is not just „something again for the beauties” who cares a little more about appearance than usual. Hair growth products with Anagain can give real solutions to both gender. I’m not a scientist so I wouldn’t say that I fully understand the process behind but I have always prefered choosing natural solutions. I don’t think it would make a significant change after just a few application but I do believe that regular usage can help to get back balance which is a very good base for healthy hair growth. It’s said to be effective after three months’ usage. Some products contain both Anagain and CBD oil for a better result.

CBD in hair care

Hair growth products with CBD oil

Maybe you agree with me if I say that CBD oil is one of the most exciting thing now on the beauty market. The buzz about it is not surprising. Some people welcome this change while others think it to be harmful and dangerous. Maybe it’s because of the incomplete knowledge. We can easily judge something by the cover. In this case some people think it’s toxic because it’s derived from a plant being toxic. The reason I write about it is the fact that hair care is also involved. Some hair salons have built this kind of offers into their services and companies are also trying to feed the new demand by developing new products. Hair growth products with CBD oil.

Your Beauty Hair about CBD products. Sales of CBD products skyrocketed and expected to keep growing.
Sales of CBD products skyrocketed and expected to keep growing.

What is CBD oil?

CBD oil is not equal to Cannabis, Marijuana or Hemp. Moreover these three things are not the same either. Cannabis Sativa is the family, Marijuana and Hemp derive from. These two plants have a different appearance and chemical compositions. The component to make you high is THC what is in Marijuana. CBD, what is a short name for cannabidiol comes from Hemp and will not change your state of mind. Thinking about my own pieces of information after reading about this topic in the first times, I was confused as well. Why? Because of a small but very important difference in the names of cannabidiol and cannabinoid. CBD and THC are both cannabinoids (two from more than a hundred) but only CBD is cannabidiol. I just simply mixed them and it made me feel kind of helpless before.

Are you more curious? Read the blog post “CBD and how it works in our bodies” or watch the video included…

Is CBD harmful or safe

Given I’m not an expert I cannot make unquestionable claims about it. Studies are ongoing to know more about its side-effects and benefits as well. Nevertheless in 2018 FDA approved the usage of CBD as a therapy. Unlike THC from Marijuana, CBD is not psychoactive and the (World Health Organization declared it not to cause harm. (2017) Some believe that CBD can have an effect on some receptors in the body and make a good influence on the immune system.

Hair growth products with CBD oil

Let’s get back to hair care now. Not only hair salons started to use this ingredient but there are more and more CBD infused products on the market as well. So what can this oil can do for our hair ? Why can we suppose any positive effects on hair and scalp after using this oil?

You can buy different kinds of products with CBD oil and hair care products are not exceptions either.
  • It’s said to contain a lot of Vitamin A, E and C. These antioxidants can support the health of your hair.
  • It’s rich in fatty acids, like (but not only) Omega 3 and Omega 6. They can make your hair hydrated.
  • It can be a good source of calcium, magnesium and potassium. Important nutrients to keep overall health and support hair growth.
  • The amino acids in the oil can help to prevent hair breakage and maintain a natural texture.
  • Massaging it into scalp can improve blood circulation.

If you would like to try a shampoo with this ingredient, Hempson organic shampoo could be a good choice. It’s sulphate and paraben free.

As I see hair growth products with CBD oil can create favourable conditions for hair growth. With the vitamins, fatty and amino acids it can support also your scalp and healthy scalp is the beginning of beautiful hair.

If you like using natural oils, you may be interested in a shampoo with CBD oil.

Is it legal?

In the United Kingdom CBD is not controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act and products with this oil can be sold legally. It’s true only with a maximum 0.2% THC content as described in the article of BBC News.

After all… I’m open to your feedback and don’t hesitate to contact me if you have some questions or suggestions. What is your opinion about such products? Have you ever tried them? Or would you consider buying hair care products with CBD oil? If you still prefer to choose another natural solution remember following oils:

Find the product you would try:

The aim of this post is sharing the information I’ve collected because I find these products really exciting. Always keep in mind that hair problems can show other health issues so it’s always better to ask for a doctor’s help if it’s not any getting better.

First welcome in my first post of 2019 and let me wish you a happy new year. I hope you had a great last year and you could spent your holidays with your family and friends. After this enchanting period of time we have to get back to every day routine but with some new energy. Most of us make some resolutions for the new year and start January with plans and dreams. It’s great to think through what we achieved till now and realise that the chance is here for us to do what we haven’t done yet. A lot of resolutions are about being healthier or looking prettier. And not only because this is a webpage about hair care… some decide to try new hair styles or new technic, new colours or maybe another colour for every quarter year following seasons’s trends. Whatever you decided to achieve in 2019 staying healthy is one of the key ingredients to make it happen and health is a lot more than smooth skin or shiny hair. And it takes time to build healthy habits.

Set new goals for the new year

On the other hand I know there’s a lot of people who don’t make resolutions any more. Not because they wouldn’t be happy about some changes but because of all those wrong experiences through the years when they still dared to dream. But nothing happened later. A few weeks, maybe months went away and they continued with old habits. It’s like being disappointed of ourselves what leads to some kind of fear. It’s like being afraid of making resolutions again because we failed to keep them so many times before. I’ve learned it’s not our fault. They have never taught us how to set goals. It’s not only about knowing what you want. It’s not only about asking from the Universe to create the path. It’s not only about having positive thoughts. Setting goals and reaching your dreams is a hard work. Like it or not…it will not just happen.

Your dreams will not just happen.

You have made some new year’s resolutions or not I do encourage you to make some changes if you are not happy with your life. Not because of the new year. You can make such a decision any time of the year. I know saying is easy, changing is hard. But I do believe there are some ways to help yourself.  Maybe you’ve heard the things listed below too many times but they helped me so they can work for you, too. Today is always the best day to start something new so don’t wait too much.

  • Just sitting by the window with a hot chocolate while calm piano music is in the background is not just waste of time. In these moments you can forget every day rush and listen to yourself for a while. It’s essential because you cannot reach your goals if you don’t even know exactly what they are. You can set goals that will not make you happy or ones that are not likely to achieve but if you want a better life you need to find your why. There are different ways for different personal types to calm down. Find yours and you can create the chance to see your why.
  • Once you’ve found your reasons and your goals are clear, write them down. Not only the final goals. Make small steps like a monthly plan. It doesn’t mean you cannot do it in another way. Well, usually you need to be flexible and change them several times but these small steps will make you work for your dream constantly.
  • Make that board for your dreams and imagine yourself when you already reached what you want. If you have such a board it will not just make it more clear and concrete but will make you remember every single day.

Listen to yourself to find your why.

Just three simple steps but you can do a lot for your future by following them. It’s perfect if you write down everything in a simple exercise book but you can also choose something more professional and more organized. If so have a look at
Tool 4 wisdom planner. Two very popular new year’s resolutions are living more healthy and being more fit or beautiful. Doing some exercises or loosing some weight also requires planning and persistent work from you. Even if you would like to have healthier hair in the next year you have to think your hair care habits through. If you found what you want to change you should plan the way.   Instead of changing everything at a time define 1 task for every 1-2 months. If you want healthier hair. The picture below is just an example. It’s always up to your goals and the conditions you already have but it shows the necessary gradualism. Making something new your habit takes time. Change just a little, get used to it and move on to the next step. You can decide to change everything from day one but in this case it’s more likely to give up in the first 6 weeks. Most of us want results soon, or rather immediately but be patient and give time for yourself. Without patience you just jump from one way to another, try everything but never find „your one” because you cannot give the sufficient time for any method. Slow down, be patient and enjoy all the beauty around you as long as you get what you’re working for.

Define small steps to reach your goal.

I wish you big dreams, great plans and wonderful results in 2019. Just like before, I’m open to your opinions and feedback at info@yourbeautyhair.co.uk.

Winter hair care

Prevent winter hair problems

Since we’ve been over Halloween and have stepped into December everything is about Christmas. This is my favourite period during winter and I’m sure I’m not alone with this feeling. I can’t wait visiting Christmas markets with those wonderful lights and delicious foods and drinks. Nevertheless besides all the festive fun and preparations we have to remember that also our skin and hair need special care during the coldest season. We have to protect our hair and scalp from cold and its effects. Otherwise you can face one (or more) of the following hair problems:

  • Hair loss
  • Thinner hair
  • Oily hair
  • Dry, itchy scalp
  • Dandruff
  • Static hair
  • Split ends

Protect your hair from cold weather.

Hair loss and thinner hair is a typical problem because when the temperature is too low the circulatory system of our body gets less efficient. It means also hair follicles get less oxygen and nutrients. Using hot tools also matters a lot. I don’t really like using hair dryers so I usually just let my hair dry but in winter I often use it. And the result can be even more dry hair and split ends. For protection against cold the most of us choose to wear hats, while others prefer not to wear them because it can make hair oily. I don’t like feeling cold so I’m in the first type but I did experienced its bad effects as well. As far as I see it’s very important to choose the right hat. It is better to avoid too tight ones because they can reduce the airing of your hair and scalp. In my opinion the best decision is buying one that’s made of natural material. If you want to do more for the health and beauty of your hair think about nutrition and vitamins as well. Besides drinking less in winter we eat less vitamins, too. So it’s really important to have a balanced diet. Nutritional supplements can help you to provide the sufficient vitamins and hair masks can prevent split ends. Prevention is the main goal. When the ends are already split, only a hair cut helps.

Protect your hair from cold in winter.

Try to avoid using hot tools too often but still remember not to go to bed with wet hair. Hot tools can make your hair and scalp dry but you run the risk of scurfy scalp if you don’t let them dry before you go to sleep. And maybe it looks strange to put oily hair and dry hair in the same list but both of them is a real problem. Well, to share some experience of my own I used to face both problems in the same time. Given I wear hat when it’s too cold I have to shampoo more frequently because the roots get oily really soon. In the meantime the ends are dry and get brittle very easily because of the cold weather and less nutrients.  And about shampoo … rinsing with hot water can make your hair dry, too. So at the end of my hair wash procedure I rinse my hair with cooler water instead of too warm (just cooler but not cold because that can make hair static) and I decided to use hair masks only for the ends.

Winter hair care is not that simple but there are ways to cut bad effects of cold weather and keep your beautiful locks during winter. Don’t forget the right hat, a hair mask and a balanced diet.

An experience of a first try of henna

Trying henna together

I think all people who have ever tried hair colouring already heard about henna, too. But hearing or reading about it doesn’t equal with trying. You may feel that trying henna at home can be something like a challenge. If you have ever read about it you know that it will get messy and getting the desired colour may take you long hours with the mixture on your hair. To be honest I think these are the reasons why a lot of women choose „normal” dyes. They are much more simpler. You can find an hour for it even if you’re busy. You can go to a salon or you can even invite a friend to make it for you while you both talk about all the week’s stories with each other. Why not, it’s fun. Nevertheless there’s still some really important benefits about henna. It’s natural with no chemicals so it’s worth a try for sure.

Henna's benefit is having no chemicals

This post is rather sharing some experience with you about henna instead of just listing a few facts. After collecting some pieces of information my friend decided to try it and share this „adventure” with me. Some people make fast decisions while others think longer about making a change. Regarding hair colour, I think it’s always better to think it through twice.  If it’s henna, the reason is the fact that you cannot just switch to „normal dyes” after using it if you prefer another colour with less mess. So – get back to us – the decision was made, the dye was bought and we were ready for having fun.

Given we read kind of scary opinions about elbow-grease work of breaking henna bricks into pieces we chose powder for the first try. Also read about several natural ingredients that can be added to the dye like lemon, beetroot, coffee, tea, olive oil, egg and many more (It could be another, separate post) and we decided to make a mixture with lemon, beetroot and some tea. We didn’t do anything special in advance, I mean no mixture was made the day before. We used the cream almost immediately. Have I told you it was fun? Look at the nasty smiling face in the bowl:

Making the henna mixture

So we tried to make the bathroom prepared and my friend didn’t forget about using some cream on her forehead, back of the neck, ears and also along the hairline. She wanted to avoid coloured spots on her skin for sure. Later it came out that it was a really good and effective act. Okay, so all was fine, rubber gloves were on and we were ready to make it. We didn’t succeed with applying henna with a hair dye brush so we switched to applying with hands very early.  Comparing the mixture with „normal” hair dyes it seemed to be less spreadable and a little dryer. (Maybe we didn’t catch the perfect percentages about the ingredients for the first time.) Well, small pieces of henna were all around the bathroom and my friend said to have a scary feeling after applying the dye. She had the impression that her hair will dry with the mixture and it’ll be like an old bough and can break into pieces at any time. Of course it didn’t happen.

We thought that we were very mindful about everything. Yes. Expect one little thing. We didn’t lock the bathroom door. Someone came in of course and turned out immediately with loud laughing. Another friend of us. Although he knew what was going on, he was not prepared to the view of strange and kind of suspicious spots all around the bathroom. After this shock … we covered her hair with a plastic firm then used also a towel to prevent even more pieces of hair dye anywhere and get prepared to the rest of the day (and night) with some snacks ’nd films together.

The mixture was on her hair for about ten hours and washing it out takes quiet long time but the result was soft, shiny hair with a thicker texture. I can understand that traditional henna applications are done in groups because it’s a long procedure with a lot of mess. While making it together is fun.

First try of henna

I’ve got to tell that later I found different opinions about adding more ingredients to henna. Just for an example while some think coffee can make the colour darker, others say it to be false given there’s no dyeing agents in it. You can read even more about henna in this post.

An alternative way for hair dyeing

A little more about henna

I’ve been hearing the name Henna quiet often for many years now. That’s why I suppose there’s nothing new about this option of hair colour. Nevertheless I haven’t look any deeper into it so far. It happened that a friend of mine tried it recently for the first time so she gave me the idea to write about it a little more. What is Henna at all? Where does it come from? What is it made of? Is it all natural? Can you be sure that you do only good to your hair and scalp when you use it? How long we used it for this purpose? What other purposes can it be used. If you already know the answers for these questions you can stop and check another post. 😉 If not… stay with me and learn a little more about it together.

An alternative way of hair colour: henna.

What is it actually?

Okay. Henna is a dye, we’ve caught that already. Natural, made of a plant, that has been used for such purposes since ancient times. All the same it became so popular in the Western culture only in the last 50 years. It’s said that even Egyptian mummies’ hair was coloured with it. It has been used not only for hair dyeing but for skin decoration, too. In some countries it’s very popular to apply it before weddings. It symbolizes fertility and they believe it can help about having a happy family. The dye itself is made of Lawsonia inermis. Maybe you have heard about henna tree or Egyptian pivet. Well, these are different names for the same plant that is growing originally in Africa, South-Asia and North-Australia.

Henna has been used since ancient times

How can it be used?

Lawsonia inermis holds lawsone what is the reason of the usability in colouring the skin, hair, nails or other materials that contain protein but only after mashing it. The whole leaves will not help you about staining. In regions where it grows they make a dry powder from it then add some liquid. Some essential oils – like tea tree or lavender – are able to make colouring more effective while others – like eucalyptus – are better to avoid because of skin irritation. If you decided to try henna you are in a simpler situation. You don’t need to make any mixtures because ready blocks are available on the market.

Henna can be mixed with essential oils

What hair colour can I have after using henna?

The result depends on the original colour of your hair but this solution is for you mainly if you dream about some tone of red. The lightest can be similar to orange and the darkest is auburn. I suppose you disagree now if you have ever checked it on the internet. Maybe you saw such dyes for blond or even black hair. This is true but those are not pure Henna. The colouring agent is not lawsone but other natural dyes. In some cases chemicals. I have always prefered natural solutions nevertheless keep in mind that there are experiences to claim that this solution will not completely cover grey hair and keep the highlights you had before colouring.

Henna is natural and keeps your highlights

Is it all natural?

My opinion is that as long as you don’t live in a region where it’s grown and mixed you cannot be 100 percent sure. Unfortunately. It’s possible that you paid for henna dye but you got a product with another colouring ingredient. As long as these other ingredients are still natural – like cassia obovata – it shouldn’t cause a problem but some products can contain metal salts or chemicals. They can cause itching or allergic reactions. It’s better to be careful because you can find products with the name Henna although they don’t even contain it. The best example is neutral henna which is not even a dye but still a really good option as a conditioner. Or black henna which sounds really good. We could think: Finally there’s some healthy solution for black hair but you need to think it twice because of a possible extra ingredient, coal-tar. It contains PPD which can cause even lifelong problems.

And now you can tell about some companies who promise you to have black hair with Henna and still in a healthy way. Well, real henna will never turn your hair black. These products are indigo-based and safe but calling them henna is a mistake. These names can be confusing if one doesn’t read a little more about this topic. Choosing this option to have black hair is a good decision as long as it’s indigo-based. Clicking here you can read more about Clicking here you can read more about how can you achieve black hair with only natural solutions.

In case you want to use natural solutions as many parts of your life as possible you can do it also about hair colour.  I wouldn’t say that applying henna is as simple and fast as other dyes but keeping your health is a big thing. But what if after trying it you feel that it’s not for you? There are different opinions about using „normal” dyes after henna. Because of these opposite opinions I would suggest to wait as long as your hair grows out this natural dye.
