Do you think that rosehip oil is not known enough?

Rosehip oil, just another oil in hair care?

When we say oil for beauty care, most of us think about olive, coconut, or argan oil. I think, rosehip oil is not a real famous one. Before starting my blog, I didn’t know too much about this oil. Mainly regarding hair care. I certainly know rosehip, and I love it. When I was a child, we even go out and collect some to make tea. We used to drink it when we had a cold. The tea was made in an unusual way. We used cold water, instead of hot and it always took a full night to be ready. We did it the easy way, washed the rosehip, cut it, put cold water and just get back to it the next day. Nevertheless, I didn’t know about rosehip oil.

What is rosehip?

Rosehip is the fruit of roses. Looks like a berry full of seeds. It is well known because of its high vitamin C content. Eating it raw doesn’t really happen, because of the seeds and the hairs inside. It’s more likely to make a tea from the berries.

The history of rosehip

Like many other plants, rosehip also has a long history. It has been used as a medicine in ancient times already. Chinese, Greeks, Romans, Persians, they all knew and used rosehip. Tea or syrup was used to treat respiratory infections or sore throat. In ancient Egypt, there was another meaning of this fruit. It represented the order of silence. To keep the secrets.

A bit more about folklore and magic

Due to a legend about the Dark Ages, Vikings fortified themselves with rosehips while invading foreign lands. In hard times, when food sources were limited, like during World War II, British children took rosehip syrup to support their health. There is also folklore about rosehip. Some believed that you can make a wish for finding true love, if you put rosehip and petals in a handkerchief and thrice tied in a bundle with a red ribbon. Well, not any time though. You should do that on a Friday, linked to the goddesses of love and romance. The ones who believe in magic and spells, used it for good luck and prosperity.

  • It may help to get rid of dandruff and itchy scalp.
  • It can help dry strands regain moisture.
  • With its vitamins and fatty acids, it can keep hair and scalp nourished.
  • Affective against split ends, but – like with other oils – this result is only temporary.
  • This oil can tame frizzy hair.
  • This is not a heavy oil, so it doesn’t leave a greasy residue.

How to use rosehip oil in your hair care routine?

  • You can use rosehip oil when you make scalp massage.
  • Use it as a leave-in conditioner, by smoothing them over your hair.
  • Have a natural, but temporary split end solution by applying this oil over the ends.
  • You can boost your regular conditioner with adding a few drops of rosehip oil.
  • And also, you can mix this oil with essential oils. Two teaspoons of rosehip oil with 1-1 drops of rosemary oil and peppermint oil, will give you a mixture to boost hair growth. Just apply it on the scalp. Leave it on for about an hour and rinse well. Never put essential oils on the skin, without diluting.

Who should not use it?

Rosehip oil is considered safe for using on skin or hair, but it’s not recommended for internal use. For some, applying rosehip oil on the skin, may cause skin irritation, redness, rash or allergic reaction. That’s why you should never skip doing a patch test before using.

Remember safety always

Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil before applying it topically. Unlike essential oils, rosehip extract doesn’t need to be diluted with a carrier oil. In fact, some people use rosehip oil extract as a carrier oil for their essential oils. Do a patch test before using the oil to make sure it doesn’t irritate your skin.
